(DailyVantage.com) – Controversial Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and two dozen other Democrats are calling for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. The Democrats pushing for a cease-fire are demanding President Biden support a cease-fire due to what they say are human rights violations occurring in Gaza. In her call for Biden to support a ceasefire, Ocasio-Cortez specifically cites the harm to children as a reason to support a peaceful resolution.
Among the 23 lawmakers calling for a cease-fire are Ocasio-Cortez, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib, all of whom are known for their progressive liberal political platforms. In the letter to President Biden, the group of progressives cites figures from Israel and Hamas sources regarding the total number of children who have died or gone missing since the war began.
Although progressives often criticize Israel for its respon se to the surprise attack from Hamas, the letter focuses more on the total number of lives lost in the conflict. The Democrats do refer to how many children are dead because of actions taken by both sides in the war, and they express concern about what they see as a disproportionate response from Israel. According to the progressives, Israel has killed more than 11,000 Palestinians since the war began.
The letter also condemns Hamas for the surprise attack on Israel, which took approximately 1,200 Israeli lives. Hamas also took more than 200 Israelis hostage. The liberals address statistics from both sides of the conflict and claim that the United States should work towards ending the conflict for the sake of civilians.
Also addressed in the letter is Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, who has been outspoken about ending the Israel-Hamas war. Blinken recently made headlines after warning Israel against a continued occupation of Gaza upon the war’s conclusion, claiming the United States wouldn’t support such a course of action. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu quickly dispelled rumors about a continued occupation of Gaza after Hamas’ expulsion, claiming Israel will not remain in Gaza outside of providing security responsibilities for the region.
In the letter, the progressives thanked Biden for advocating for more humanitarian aid but claimed that the Biden administration could do more.
