(DailyVantage.com) – Garland, who has become a rather polarizing figure on the right, will likely face a slew of hard-hitting questions from GOP Congressmen.
Garland and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas stirred up quite a bit of controversy on the right when they declared that white supremacy was the most “dangerous threat” to American democracy in May of 2021.
When speaking before the Senate Appropriations Committee, Garland repeatedly referred to the January 6 capitol riots, saying that the participants were “racially or ethnically motivated.”
What’s more, it was Garland’s Department of Justice that oversaw the raid of then President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach Florida. During a press conference, Garland stated that he “personally approved” of the raid.
Trump responded with vicious attacks against Garland on Truth Social saying that the raid was “unAmerican, unwarranted, and unnecessary.”
Questions around both January 6th and the raid on Trump’s estate are expected to come up during the hearing.
Congressmen from the 118th Congress are also likely to bring up the classified documents found in President Biden’s and Vice President Mike Pence’s residences.
Republicans may also probe Garland about his targeting of pro-life groups and individuals. Representative Ronny Jackson (R-TX) on Saturday tweeted that “Garland is going after 8 pro-life activists for peacefully protesting…To Biden, pro-life Americans are the Enemy!!”
While Republicans will certainly have a few choice words for Garland, Democrats are likely to treat the Attorney General with kid gloves. Garland, after all, has always been lauded as a sensible moderate. His name first entered the mainstream when former President Obama pegged him for Supreme Court Justice following the death of conservative Antonin Scalia.
Whatever the focus of the hearings, they will, undoubtedly, be eventful.
