(DailyVantage.com) – In addition to the hundreds of thousands of migrants who attempt to cross the border on foot, there are many more who pay to get smuggled into the country. They’re often packed into trucks like sardines, traveling in unsafe conditions to gain entry to the United States. Oftentimes, it results in injuries or capture — and sometimes both.
On January 4, the Presidio County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office detained 16 illegal immigrants who had tried to hitch a ride, presumably to Marfa, a town 40 miles north of where authorities captured the group. When deputies responded, they found 8 males, 7 females and a child next to a disabled vehicle with a blown out tire.

The situation for the detainees was perilous as there’s very little around the area, in terms of residences, business and more importantly, water sources. Hundreds who attempt to cross the border on foot and make their way into the US often die due to dehydration. Fortunately, authorities discovered these migrants before the situation turned dire. They’re now in the US Customs and Border Protection’s custody, where agents will process them.
The driver of the truck was nowhere to be found, and authorities believed he hitched a ride back to Mexico to evade capture.
