(DailyVantage.com) – Due to increased scrutiny following his abysmal performance during the first presidential debate, President Joe Biden’s recent gaffes have made national headlines.
One such blunder occurred during a recent NATO conference in Washington, D.C., where Biden spoke about foreign affairs and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelenskyy attended the meeting and came on stage after Biden finished his speech. During his speech’s closing segment, Biden attempted to introduce Zelenskyy but mistook the Ukrainian president for his rival, Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Biden quickly realized his mistake and attempted to correct himself, claiming that he confused Zelenskyy with Putin due to his determination to defeat Putin. Zelenskyy tried to help divert attention from the mistake by claiming he was better than Putin, to which Biden agreed. Although the two world leaders joked about the mishap and quickly moved on from the ordeal, online commenters and other international leaders took to social media to share their thoughts and jokes about Biden. Other elected officials also addressed the incident, citing Biden’s mistake as evidence of his declining mental capabilities.
Among the elected officials who referenced Biden’s mistake was Scott Walker, the former governor of Wisconsin. Walker took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a video clip of the incident and criticize Biden. According to Walker, Biden’s supporters shouldn’t defend the president as he frequently makes simple mistakes when talking to other world leaders or members of Congress. Walker said that Biden wasn’t mentally fit to hold office when he won the 2020 election and that voters shouldn’t support the aging president’s ongoing reelection campaign.
Biden’s social media team quickly responded to the mistake by posting a video and sharing a transcript, which included Biden mistakenly calling Zelenskyy by Putin’s name. Online audiences seemed confused by Biden’s social media team’s decision, claiming they shouldn’t have shared the post if they wanted social media users to support the president. Biden has also responded to the mishap publicly, claiming that he simply confused Zelenskyy due to his ongoing desire to end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and that the incident wasn’t indicative of his cognitive decline.
