(DailyVantage.com) – The White House unveiled its proposed “reforms” to the US Supreme Court on Monday, which includes support for legislation that would impose term limits on justices as well as an enforceable code of ethics.
According to the White House fact sheet, the proposal also includes a constitutional amendment that would remove presidential immunity in response to the Supreme Court granting former President Trump partial immunity from prosecution for official acts taken during his term in office.
The proposals have little chance of clearing Congress with Republicans controlling the House. The proposed term limits could not be enacted through simple legislation but would require the ratification of a constitutional amendment.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson told reporters on Monday that the White House plan was “dead on arrival” in the House.
When asked about the speaker’s comment when he arrived in Austin to deliver a speech, the president said Speaker Johnson was “dead on arrival.” Biden vowed to “figure out a way” to push the proposal through without the House, a move that would be unconstitutional.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) had little hope for the White House plan, telling reporters on Monday that the possibility of any legislation making it through Congress was “remote.”
Durbin blamed the slim prospects on Republican lawmakers, whom he said were “not participating.”
Republicans have portrayed the Democrat efforts to “reform” the Supreme Court as politically motivated and a violation of the Separation of Powers. Republicans have argued that the proposed reforms were prompted by Democrat anger over the conservative majority on the Court which has blocked much of the Biden administration’s efforts to enact policies without Congressional approval.
Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee, hopes the Supreme Court reforms could help motivate the Democrat’s more left-wing base to turn out in the November election.
The Senate Democrats began pressing for so-called “reforms” to the Supreme Court ever since the Court became majority conservative. Media outlets like the New York Times and Pro Publica have published hit pieces on conservative justices to help the Democrats force through legislation to undermine the conservative majority.
