(DailyVantage) – Last Sunday, a group of illegal migrants in New York City began hurling objects at passersby before assaulting two men who attempted to intervene, shoving one of them through the glass door of an apartment building, the New York Post reported.
Around 9:45 a.m. Sunday, police responded to reports that several individuals were throwing objects. According to police sources and witnesses on the scene, the suspects were migrants residing at a former jail that is now used as a shelter for asylum seekers.
One man coming out of his nearby apartment confronted the migrants and was punched and kicked by the group. According to witnesses, the man was then shoved through the glass door.
A security guard who works at the converted asylum center told the New York Post that he saw the altercation between the migrants and the first man who attempted to intervene. He said the man was chased down the block by several of the migrants before backing up against the glass door of the apartment building. The security guard told the Post that the migrant men pushed him through the glass and pulled him back as he tried to get away.
The 35-year-old man had a tourniquet applied to his arm before being taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
A maintenance worker from the apartment building told the Post that everything in the neighborhood changed after the asylum center was opened. He said while police do come by, it isn’t enough.
A second man also attempted to intervene in the attack but was beaten by the migrants, suffering minor injuries, police said. He was taken to NYC Health, where he was listed in stable condition.
Only one migrant was arrested in the incident. Police were still seeking two other suspects who fled the scene on scooters.
A building manager in the area told the Post that the asylum center doesn’t have enough security to control the migrants staying there. He expressed frustration with the city, saying that local businesses and residents have “nobody to complain to.”
