Cause of Death Announced for Fitness Icon Richard Simmons

(DailyVantage.com) – The Los Angeles medical examiner released the official cause of death for fitness celebrity Richard Simmons, who was found dead in his home last month.

According to an August 22 statement from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, the primary cause of Simmons’ death was “blunt traumatic injuries.” Simmons also suffered from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease which also contributed to his death, the medical examiner said.

The medical examiner’s office confirmed that Simmons suffered a fall on July 11 and spent the following day in bed. He died on July 13, the day after his 76th birthday.

The medical examiner concluded that his death was accidental.

At the time of his death, law enforcement said Simmons’ housekeeper had tried to get him to seek medical attention after the fall but he refused.

Simmons’ brother Lenny spoke out about his brother’s cause of death just days before the medical examiner’s report was released.

In a statement to People magazine on August 21, Simmons family spokesman Tom Estey said the medical examiner’s office had informed Lenny that his brother’s death was due to complications from a fall and that it was accidental.

Estey confirmed that arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease played a role in Simmons’ death. He said that the tox report found no drugs in Simmons’ system except for the medication he had been prescribed by a doctor.

For nearly a month, the medical examiner’s database listed the cause of death as “deferred.” The database has since been updated to reflect the official cause of death.

Simmons’ body was released for burial on July 17.

A week after his death, Simmons was buried at the Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary, according to the death certificate.

Estey, who served as Simmons’ spokesman for more than 30 years, said the family expressed its thanks for the “outpouring of love and support” following the fitness guru’s death.
