(DailyVantage.com) – CNN data reporter Harry Enten recently warned that Vice President Kamala Harris is on track to perform poorly among union voters, a group that has historically leaned Democratic. Enten highlighted that Harris is only leading among union households by nine points in current polling—a significant drop from the 30-point margin Bill Clinton secured in 1996 and even lower than Joe Biden’s 19-point lead in 2020. If these numbers hold, it would mark the worst Democratic performance among union voters in decades.
Enten also pointed to a sharp shift in support among voters who attended trade or vocational schools. While Bill Clinton led this group by seven points in the early 1990s, Donald Trump now holds a 31-point advantage over Harris. This shift suggests that the traditional Democratic base of working-class voters is moving toward Trump, who has aggressively courted this demographic.
In addition, Enten discussed Trump’s gains among non-college voters of color. While Harris still leads in this group, her margin has narrowed significantly, down from a 45-point lead for Biden in 2020 to just 28 points today. Enten explained that Trump has been successful in attracting a growing number of non-college-educated voters, including people of color, a trend that could reshape the electoral landscape.
The broader implication of Enten’s analysis is that the Democratic Party may be losing its grip on key working-class and union voters, with Donald Trump making inroads in groups that were once solidly Democratic. The Teamsters labor union’s decision not to endorse a candidate in 2024, after traditionally backing Democrats, underscores the challenges Harris and her party face in reconnecting with this critical voter base.
