Democrat Resigns After Being Arrested for Stealing Trump Signs

(DailyVantage.com) – Lowell Simon, the former chair of the Moore County Democratic Party in North Carolina, has resigned following his arrest for allegedly stealing roadside signs supporting former President Donald Trump. Simon, who is also running for the North Carolina House in November, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor larceny related to the theft of political signs.

The incident occurred when a deputy from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office noticed Simon removing campaign signs from the roadside along Seven Lakes Drive at approximately 5:25 p.m. on Thursday. The deputy was responding to an unrelated call but followed up by visiting Simon’s residence, where the signs were found in his vehicle. Simon admitted to taking the signs, which were then returned to their rightful owner, according to the sheriff’s office.

A warrant for Simon’s arrest was issued on Saturday, and he was released under a written promise to appear in court. His first court date is scheduled for October 30.

In a Facebook post, the Moore County Democratic Party announced Simon’s resignation, acknowledging his contributions but distancing the organization from his actions. “While we appreciate the hard work and dedication he has shown to the Democratic Party and the community, the Moore County Democratic Party cannot and will not condone the tampering of political signs or any other illegal activity,” the post read. Simon’s apology was also noted, with the party stressing the importance of respecting laws that protect freedom of expression.

Simon explained that he acted out of frustration, as signs supporting Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein were being obstructed by signs promoting Trump. “My worse angels got the better of me,” Simon admitted, adding that he took the signs during daylight, not attempting to hide his actions.

The local Democratic Party reaffirmed its commitment to free speech and expressed hope that law enforcement will continue to enforce these laws impartially. Sheriff Ronnie Fields, a Republican, reminded the public that removing or tampering with campaign signs is illegal under North Carolina law.

As the November election approaches, the Moore County Democratic Party remains focused on supporting its candidates while dealing with the fallout from Simon’s resignation.
