(DailyVantage.com) – Senator Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ), in an interview with the Washington Post on Thursday, excoriated “raucous” Congressional Republicans for their heckling during President Biden’s divisive State of the Union Address last Tuesday.
The speech, which was met with loud jeers and eye-rolls from the right side of the aisle, made headlines for its entertainment value.
At one point, after President Biden suggested that certain Republicans wanted to “sunset” Social Security and Medicare, Republicans erupted in heckles and boos. Marjorie Taylor Greene, notably, yelled “liar!” from the back of the chamber. This was vaguely reminiscent of the time Joe Wilson (R-SC) yelled “you lie!” during a speech given by former President Barack Obama in 2009.
Sinema said of the Republican’s behavior, “I was worried people were going to start throwing hot dogs and popcorn at each other.” Sinema went on to call the raucous nature of certain members of Congress “disturbing and sad”.
Sinema, who recently left the Democratic Party to register as an independent, is seen, along with Joe Manchin (D-WV), as one of the more moderate members of the Senate, criticizing both Biden and Trump on numerous occasions. She has in the past sided with Manchin against President Biden’s liberal policy agenda. Sinema, for example, opposed Biden’s and the Democrat’s attempts to eradicate the filibuster back in July of 2022.
So, to say that Sinema is a partisan Democrat lambasting members of the opposing party would be inaccurate.
To be clear, Sinema was not pointing the finger at all Republicans in the interview, saying that there were “ also members of the Democratic Party who would his or chant as well.”
Newly appointed House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) also attacked House Republicans for their behavior during Biden’s speech saying that they were “aggressive” and “childish”.
