(DailyVantage.com) – Hollywood actor George Clooney is facing backlash from Democrats who blame him for the party’s 2024 presidential loss after Vice President Kamala Harris’s crushing defeat. Clooney, who had been vocal about his belief that President Joe Biden should step aside for a stronger candidate, is now taking heat from disappointed voters who claim his public push influenced Biden’s exit and left Harris with an impossible task.
In an op-ed published by The New York Times in July, Clooney called for Biden, then 81, to abandon his reelection bid, writing, “We are not going to win in November with this president.” He further claimed that his concerns were shared privately by numerous Democratic senators and governors. Clooney’s message was direct: the party needed fresh leadership if it hoped to retain the White House. When Biden announced his decision to step aside just days later, Clooney praised him as “selfless,” leaving Harris to lead the Democratic ticket.
Following Trump’s decisive victory, frustrated Democrats are sarcastically “thanking” Clooney for what they view as a fatal miscalculation. On social media, one group of veteran-led political commentators, altNOAA, called for a “talk” with Clooney. Another commentator wrote, “Thank you, George Clooney, for pushing America into Trump’s arms. #MAGA.”
Others in Hollywood had joined Clooney in suggesting Biden step down, including author Stephen King and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who both publicly called for a change in leadership. Barbra Streisand also praised Biden’s decision to exit, but few endorsements were as forceful or visible as Clooney’s op-ed.
With the election results sinking in, discontented Democrats are reflecting on whether their push for new leadership backfired, ultimately benefiting Trump’s campaign. As one critic observed, Clooney’s advocacy for Biden’s departure left Harris with a shortened campaign period and a steep uphill battle against Trump. Now, many are questioning whether this gamble was worth the cost.
