(DailyVantage.com) – Disney has officially confirmed that it plans to remove a longtime character to avoid controversy, given the character’s association with alcohol.
The character in question is Liver Lips McGrowl, a 50-year-old character associated with the “Country Bear Jamboree.” However, Disney isn’t just removing Liver Lips McGrowl from its Disney World locations, as the entertainment giant plans to reintroduce Liver Lips McGrowl with a different name. McGrowl’s name has long drawn minor criticisms from various online commenters, given the term “Liver Lips” having an association with alcohol consumption.
The decision to remove Liver Lips McGrowl from Disney World comes during a seven-month hiatus for the “Country Bear Jamboree,” which will return without Liver Lips McGrowl for the foreseeable future. Disney announced the plan to replace the beloved character on its blog, Inside the Magic, citing the derogative association Liver Lips McGrowl’s name has with alcohol abuse and its impact on the human liver. According to Disney, Liver Lips McGrowl will be replaced with Romeo McGrowl, a similar character with minor cosmetic differences.
While Liver Lips McGrowl’s removal is the latest instance of Disney changing various characters and stories to match the company’s increasingly progressive culture, it isn’t the first time the entertainment giant has edited its historical characters. Over the past few years, Disney has increasingly changed details about beloved characters like Mickey Mouse or Mulan to avoid controversy or accusations of stereotypical representation. Disney fans have responded to the various changes to beloved characters with growing frustration, with many taking to social media to criticize the rebranding of Liver Lips McGrowl.
Several users reacted to Disney’s decision on X, formerly Twitter, with ire and criticism of Disney’s increasingly “woke” decisions and policies. One user shared an image of Liver Lips McGrowl on stage, jokingly expressing their condolences for the soon-to-be-removed character.
Other X users expressed discontent with Disney’s proactive approach to avoiding controversy, claiming that Disney shouldn’t have removed a 50-year-old character simply because it might’ve caused controversy. While Liver Lips McGrowl’s return date remains unannounced, some insiders believe the once-beloved character’s replacement could join the other bears of “Country Bear Jamboree” within a few months.
