(DailyVantage.com) – On Tuesday it was announced that the 2024 Democratic National Convention would be held in Chicago, Illinois.
New York and Atlanta were also being floated as other possible locations. Ultimately, though, officials decided that Chicago, because of its close proximity to pivotal states like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota, would be an ideal venue for the convention.
The aforementioned midwestern states are a part of what is known in political circles as the “blue wall”. Blue wall states, up until recently, were solidly Democratic. In 2016, however, former Republican President Donald Trump penetrated that blue wall, allowing him to easily clinch the presidency.
The Chicago decision, therefore, was the result of careful calculation on the part of political strategists.
Democratic National Convention Chair Jaime Harrison, in response to the recent development, wrote that he was “thrilled that Democrats will take the stage in Chicago to share our party’s vision and values.”
“The Midwest”, Harrison went on to say, “reflects America”.
Holding the convention in New York, on the other hand, would have been a highly questionable decision, as it is an impenetrable blue state, far from the Midwestern battleground states.
President Joe Biden lauded the decision to hold the DNC in the Windy City, saying “Chicago is a great choice to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention.” Biden went on to say that Democrats would have the perfect opportunity to tout their victories on the economy.
The economy, however, has proven to be President Biden’s biggest weak spot.
According to RealClearPolitics, Biden’s job approval on the economy averages 37.3%. And a Gallup poll conducted in March had him at a pathetic 32% on the economy.
So, it appears unclear what economic achievements Biden is referring to. The convention will likely center around anti-Trump rhetoric, rather than Democratic success.
