(DailyVantage.com) – Florida Representative and long time Trump supporter John Rutherford (R-FL) announced on Tuesday that he would be throwing his support behind the former President.
In a tweet, Rutherford referred to Trump as a “friend” and as “the right person” to do the job.
The congressman also went after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s political indictment of Trump, saying “As a former sheriff, I understand the importance of a fair and impartial system of justice. The systematic targeting of Americans with conservative ideals, especially our 45th President of the United States, disgraces our nation’s legacy.”
Rutherford now joins a growing group of Florida Republicans who have endorsed Trump over their own Governor, Ron DeSantis.
So far, Florida representatives Greg Steub, Cory Mills, Anna Paulina Luna, Byron Donald’s, and Matt Gaetz have all endorsed the former President.
DeSantis, meanwhile, continues to slip in the national polls. On Friday, April 14th, a FOX 56/Emerson poll had former President Trump leading DeSantis by an incredible 39 points, a lead that was unthinkable just a few months ago. A University if Georgia poll, also from Friday, had Trump with a still impressive 21 point lead.
Though DeSantis appears to be performing better in states like Arizona and Pennsylvania, his downward trajectory is undeniable.
In a New York Times op-ed from last month, Nate Cohn painted quite the gloomy picture of DeSantis’s current standing in the polls. “It’s the trend that’s important”, wrote Cohn, “every single one of these polls has shown Mr. DeSantis faring worse than before…”
While some prominent Freedom Caucus Republicans like Chip Roy (R-TX) and Thomas Massie (R-KY) have endorsed the Florida Governor, Republicans from his home state seem to be abandoning him.
It’s also important to note that DeSantis has not officially announced his candidacy for President in 2024.
