Earthquake Hits Rural Afghanistan, Hundreds Reported Dead

Over 1,000 DEAD – Sudden Disaster Kills Countless People

(DailyVantage.com) – Things have been going downhill in Afghanistan, which has been hard-hit economically since the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal in August 2021. The Taliban quickly seized back control and, within months, reneged on promises of fair treatment, especially for women. Now, the country’s citizens have another issue to grapple with — a devastating earthquake has claimed the lives of over 1,000 people.

During the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 22, a 5.9-magnitude quake struck rural Afghanistan near Pakistan’s border. It was a disastrous event for the people living in the area as most homes were poorly constructed and quickly leveled by the shaking. According to Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi, more than 1,000 people have died, with children possibly contributing to the casualty totals as well. Unfortunately, authorities expect the toll to rise.

Now, the Taliban is pleading for help in the aftermath of the worst earthquake to strike the country since 2002. They’ve reached out to the UN, asking them to “support them [with] assessing the needs and responding to affected [individuals].” Karimi said there has been “serious damage to the infrastructure,” and they need the international community’s help, which may be hard to come by considering the Taliban’s actions over the last year.
