Evacuations Halted in Wake of Russian Advances in Key Ukrainian City

Putin Just Secured A Horrifying New Victory

(DailyVantage.com) – The fighting continues in Ukraine as Russian troops seek to claim more victories more than three months after Putin ordered the invasion. Despite efforts to evacuate civilians in some areas, Ukrainian officials halted them amidst a renewed onslaught of Russian offensives to take the key city.

On Tuesday, May 31, Oleksandr Stryuk, a city official in the Luhansk Oblast of Ukraine, said Russian troops finally managed to break through its defenses. The resulting fighting in the streets of Sievierodonetsk made it too dangerous to evacuate the city’s remaining civilians.

Stryuk spoke out about the situation in the city, saying it’s dire for citizens. “Half of the city has been captured,” he said. Russian troops are attacking it ruthlessly, leaving approximately 13,000 people in a city once home to over 100,000. Yet, Stryuk says the city remains under Ukrainian control, even though Kremlin troops are destroying it “block by block.”

Additionally, constant artillery shelling has made it impossible to evacuate civilians safely. War ravages have killed citizens, including from “direct strikes, from fragmentation wounds,” and entrapment under the rubble of destroyed buildings. Many may not have access to food, water, or other necessities.

To begin helping citizens caught in the crossfire, the Norwegian Refugee Council is calling for safety corridors to allow entry into the area by relief organizations.

Russia has intensified its aggressions to claim the Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk areas, centered on the Siverskiy Donetsk River before additional arms shipments reach Ukrainian troops. Some view the region as Russia’s next strategic target after capturing Mariupol.
