Felon in Trump Assassination Case Couldn’t Legally Own Gun

(DailyVantage.com) – Ryan Wesley Routh, a 58-year-old man, was arrested earlier this week in Florida and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. Federal prosecutors acted quickly, filing charges against him just hours after his arrest. Routh now faces two serious accusations: possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Routh’s troubles with the law go back to an incident in 2002, when he allegedly had a standoff with police. After that situation ended, he was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and possessing a weapon of mass destruction, which in this case referred to a fully automatic machine gun. His felony record from that event makes it illegal for him to own or possess a firearm today.

The recent arrest took place after an alarming incident near Donald Trump’s Palm Beach golf course. According to reports from multiple sources, Secret Service agents allegedly spotted Routh pointing a rifle through a fence at the golf course on Sunday. When they tried to approach him, Routh fled the scene. After his escape, law enforcement found an AK-style rifle, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera hidden in bushes near where Routh had been seen. It appears that he was taking a position before running off, though his exact intentions remain unclear.

Under federal law, felons are prohibited from purchasing or owning firearms. This restriction, often referred to as “100 percent gun control,” aims to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of those with a criminal history. In Routh’s case, it appears that the law was not enough to prevent him from getting his hands on a gun again, despite his past.

The charges he now faces highlight the importance of enforcing gun control measures. When felons violate these laws, it poses a threat to the safety of the public. Authorities will likely take this case seriously, as Routh’s actions could have had far-reaching consequences had he not been caught in time.
