(DailyVantage.com) – WNBA champion Natasha Cloud, the Washington Mystics guard, criticized the Supreme Court for its recent rulings, calling the United States “trash.”
Cloud went after the rulings in Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President and Fellows of Harvard College, which decided that affirmative action in college admissions violated the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment, and in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis, which decided that the LGBTQ anti-discrimination law in Colorado could not override the free speech clause of the first amendment, which includes religious expression.
Cloud’s comments against America and the Supreme Court have sparked backlash. In a tweet, she stated that, “Our country is trash… We continue to oppress Marginalized groups that we have targeted since the beginning of time. Black and brown communities and LGBTQ+
Critics were quick to attack her for calling America “trash”. As a gay woman of color herself, she took the criticism personally. Jumping on the offensive against critics, she went further in saying, Yall are tired of me saying you’re racist. IM TIRED OF YALL BEING RACIST.” And that, “my religion weaponizers… y’all the people that killed Jesus.”
Cloud went on to also criticize the United States for its record on human rights, healthcare system, mass shootings, and alleged lack of safety for people of color.
This is not Cloud’s first time participating in social justice causes, as she took part in protests in Philadelphia after the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, opting out of the 2020 WNBA season.
Critics believe her attack on America as lacking equality and opportunity falls flat when taking into account that she herself got an education and now can play basketball professionally. To many, it is truly disheartening to see such a bleak outlook on the United States. While her comments may resonate with some, her rhetoric has worked to polarize
