(DailyVantage.com) – Massachusetts Republicans are pressing the state government for answers regarding what they describe as “$1 billion in secret migrant crisis spending.” With the state facing a growing migrant crisis, the Massachusetts GOP is demanding that Governor Maura Healey’s administration reveal exactly how much money has been spent and how it has affected the state’s residents.
Amy Carnevale, the chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party, expressed frustration with the lack of transparency from the Healey administration. She stated that the administration has kept nearly $1 billion in spending hidden from the public and has blocked journalists from obtaining critical information. Carnevale mentioned that there have been over 600 incidents involving police, fire, and emergency services related to the migrant crisis, yet details have been withheld.
In response, the MassGOP has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, asking for a complete breakdown of the funds used to provide housing and other services for migrants. The request demands that the state reveal the names of government and private organizations involved in providing emergency housing, the locations of these shelters, and any related public safety or incident reports.
Governor Healey declared a state of emergency last year as the number of migrant families arriving in Massachusetts surged. However, Carnevale argued that the state’s Democratic leadership has kept the public in the dark, creating what she called a “veil of secrecy” around the situation. She urged the Healey administration to release information on the vendors profiting from the crisis and to be transparent about the impact on public safety.
The Massachusetts Republican Party’s push for transparency follows a report from the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), which warned that the state might struggle to manage the increasing number of migrants. The report noted that Massachusetts has already spent over $1 billion on sheltering programs for migrants and suggested that future costs could skyrocket if migrants currently in temporary shelters remain in the state long-term. These costs would include not just housing but also schooling, social services, healthcare, and public safety.
The MassGOP insists that Massachusetts residents deserve to know how their tax dollars are being spent and is calling for greater accountability from the state government regarding the spending on the migrant crisis.
