In his upcoming Netflix stand-up special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, the actor and comedian recounts his harrowing experience and miraculous recovery.
The special, filmed in Atlanta this October, features Foxx sharing details with a live audience about the medical emergency that landed him in a weeks-long coma. Foxx described being “on the brink of death”, with plummeting vitals and a grim prognosis from doctors.
“They told his family he might not make it,” Chambers said, adding that Foxx’s condition had spiraled so quickly it left even medical professionals doubtful of his survival.
Foxx’s health scare occurred while filming Back in Action, a Netflix film co-starring Cameron Diaz, in Georgia. The ordeal began when Foxx passed out on set, initially believing it to be a minor incident. However, he woke up in a hospital bed weeks later, disoriented and unaware he’d been in a coma.
The turning point, Chambers recounted, came in a heartwarming moment involving Foxx’s daughter. She visited her father in the hospital and played a cherished song on a guitar, a personal connection between the two. Miraculously, as she continued to play, Foxx’s vitals began to improve, baffling the medical staff.
Doctors gave Foxx only a 30% chance of survival, making his recovery all the more remarkable. In the special, he honors the healthcare workers who played a crucial role in his comeback by inviting them onstage.
Foxx also touched on the viral hospital selfie he posted during his recovery. Fans speculated wildly about his appearance, joking that he looked like a clone due to his pale and drug-affected state. Foxx, with characteristic humor, embraces the absurdity in his special while also addressing the gravity of his ordeal.
Though Netflix has not commented, What Had Happened Was… promises to be a blend of heartfelt reflection and Foxx’s signature wit, offering fans a rare glimpse into his private struggles and triumphant return.
