(DailyVantage.com) – A recent Ipsos poll conducted from September 20-22 reveals that 66 percent of Americans support the deportation of illegal migrants, a key promise of Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. This policy is favored by 90 percent of Republicans and 68 percent of independents, with 47 percent of Democrats also in favor.
The poll shows that 39 percent of Americans “strongly” support the deportation policy, including 71 percent of Republicans, 39 percent of independents, and 13 percent of Democrats. The strong support is significant because it suggests these voters may base their decisions heavily on this issue.
Additionally, 65 percent of respondents view illegal immigrants as a major or minor threat. This mirrors findings from other polls by Marist, YouGov, and Harvard-Harris, which indicate growing support for enforcing existing immigration laws. Polling numbers have surged, in part, due to Trump’s vocal criticism of President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, which have brought in about 10 million migrants since 2021.
The Ipsos poll also tested respondents’ opinions by asking if they would support deporting illegal migrants from their own communities. Despite this framing, 88 percent of Republicans, 66 percent of independents, and 48 percent of Democrats supported such actions.
Interestingly, 13 percent of respondents supported deporting even those “in the country legally”, a figure that includes one in six Republicans and one in eight Democrats. This reflects a broader concern about migration in general, as 42 percent of respondents see illegal immigrants as a “major threat,” with Republicans expressing the most concern.
Finally, the poll shows that views on legal migration are also shifting, with 24 percent of Americans viewing legal immigration as a threat, including 17 percent of Republicans. This signals a growing divide over immigration policies as the 2024 election approaches.
