(DailyVantage.com) – The mayor of Hamtramck, Michigan, Amer Ghalib, has announced his endorsement of Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential election. Ghalib, who leads a Muslim-majority city, called Trump “the right choice for this critical time.”
In a post on Facebook, Ghalib admitted that while he and Trump don’t agree on everything, he believes Trump is “a man of principles.” He wrote his message in Arabic, saying, “Though it’s looking good, he may or may not win the election and be the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice for this critical time.” Ghalib also stated that he would stand by his decision no matter the outcome, saying, “I’ll not regret my decision no matter what the outcome would be, and I’m ready to face the consequences.”
Trump shared Ghalib’s post on his Truth Social account, highlighting the support from the mayor of a city with a large Muslim population.
Ghalib’s endorsement came after he met with Trump in Flint, Michigan, for a private 20-minute conversation. The mayor later told The Detroit News that Trump was well-informed about him before their meeting. During their conversation, they discussed a variety of issues, including poll results, Michigan’s political landscape, and concerns facing Arab Americans, particularly Yemeni Americans. They also touched on the situation in Yemen, which has been a major point of concern for many Yemeni immigrants in the U.S.
Hamtramck is unique in the United States, as it is the only city governed entirely by Muslims. Over 40% of its population was born outside the U.S., giving the city a rich and diverse cultural landscape. Ghalib’s decision to endorse Trump has drawn attention due to his community’s unique position in American politics.
As the 2024 election approaches, Ghalib’s endorsement may influence voters, especially within Arab American communities, as they weigh their options for the next president of the United States.
