(DailyVantage.com) – Oregon has long been considered one of the most liberal states in the union. The city of Portland, in particular, has been a breeding ground for left-wing political activism and social justice demonstrations.
On Monday, though, Oregon’s Democratic-controlled House passed a bill that would have been totally unthinkable just a few years ago.
House Bill 2002 B, which easily passed with a 36-23 margin, would allow young children (under the age of 15) to receive abortions without parental consent. Children would, in effect, be able to hide the fact that they got an abortion from their parents.
Moreover, the bill would allow for teenagers to undergo gender affirming surgeries such as double mastectomies (the removal of a female’s breasts) and phalloplasties (the artificial creation of male genitalia).
Oregon Republicans, who are outnumbered in the state legislature, are outraged by the bill’s passage in the House. Vikki Breese-Iverson, the top Republican in Oregon’s House, called the bill an “egregious violation of the sacred relationship between a parent and a child”.
And she is not alone. The Oregon Republican Party’s chairman, Justin Hwang, accused progressive Democrats in the legislature of putting “woke ideology ahead of common sense”.
Other conservative and pro-life groups have also spoken out against the far-left legislation.
Liberal Democrats, however, have not won yet. The bill still needs to pass through the state Senate. The Senate, though, is also under Democratic control. So, as of now, House Bill 2002 B’s prospects are looking pretty good.
But, even if the bill does ultimately succeed, it is evident that conservatives in the state will not go down without a fight. Surprisingly, the liberal Beaver State has a not insignificant amount of conservative organizations that will not capitulate to the woke left. They are, however, very outnumbered.
