(DailyVantage.com) – A recent Washington Post-Ipsos poll shows that more Black Americans plan to vote now that Vice President Kamala Harris has replaced President Biden as the Democratic nominee for the 2024 election. The poll, released on Monday, reveals that 69% of Black Americans are “absolutely certain to vote”, a rise from 62% in April. A separate New York Times poll similarly found that 56% of Black Americans are “almost certain” to vote, with another 33% saying they are “very likely” to cast their ballots.
Harris’ candidacy has significantly impacted young Black voters, especially women. The poll highlights a 15-point increase among Black Americans under 30 who plan to vote, with 47% now intending to do so. Among Black women under 40, voter intent has risen by 18 points, reaching 57%.
The poll also shows that Harris holds a strong lead over Donald Trump among Black voters, with 82% of Black registered voters favoring her, compared to 12% for Trump. The New York Times poll reported similar findings, with 78% supporting Harris and 14% backing Trump.
Harris maintains overwhelming support from Black voters on most key issues, though her weakest area is handling Israel’s war with Hamas, where only 49% trust her, while 28% trust neither candidate. On immigration, Trump performs slightly better, garnering 19% support from Black Americans, while Harris leads with 55%.
This polling comes just before Harris and Trump are set to face off in their first presidential debate. Trump is expected to attack Harris over the 2021 U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan, a situation that led to the deaths of 13 soldiers. In response, Harris’ campaign has highlighted a letter from 10 retired generals and admirals defending the administration’s handling of the situation, blaming the poor circumstances on the previous administration, as noted in a Black Enterprise report.
