(DailyVantage.com) – Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is known for her provocations and general ability to stir up controversy, called for a “national divorce” between red and blue states in a tweet on President’s Day.
Greene voiced her unwillingness to coexist with liberals, saying “we are done,” Conservative states, she argues, should separate and forge a union of their own.
These comments were met with an onslaught of backlash on social media. Republicans and Democrats alike have bashed Greene for her rhetoric.
Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT), who seems to punch right more often than left, told The Salt Lake Tribune that Greene’s comments were “a kind of insanity.” Romney accused Greene of saying anything to accrue attention and media clout.
Conservative media personality and Daily Wire host Matt Walsh, in a tweet posted on Wednesday, criticized the idea saying “I’m not surrendering half of my country to these people.”
This, however, is not the first time Greene has made such remarks. In 2021, she called for a national decoupling, referencing how liberals had brought “ruin” to California.
Greene, though, is by no means alone in expressing this sentiment. Members of the right as well as the left have called for a separation of red and blue states.
The Calexit movement, which has been advocated for by leftists, calls for California to separate from the union, establishing itself as its own autonomous country.
Similarly, on the right, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) has floated the idea of Texas seceding from the union. In 2021, Cruz told a crowd at Texas A&M that Texas should go its own way if “things become hopeless”.
So, while Greene is not alone, she has conjured up a particularly remarkable social media firestorm with her remarks. Though she is now fending of attacks from the right and left, it is unlikely she will issue an apology or rescind her comments.
