(DailyVantage.com) – On Thursday, March 17, Lia Thomas, a trans female from the University of Pennsylvania, won the 500-yard freestyle women’s swimming event. Thomas, who followed the NCAA guidelines of taking testosterone suppression medication for a year before competing on a female team, took first place by a mere 0:01.75. The outcome caused a lot of controversy, and one state governor is standing up for who he believes is the rightful winner.
On Tuesday, March 22, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) denounced the NCAA for letting Thomas participate in the event, let alone win. He responded by issuing a proclamation recognizing the second-place winner, Emma Weyant, who attends the University of Virginia, as the true winner of the event.
By allowing men to compete in women's sports, the NCAA is destroying opportunities for women, making a mockery of its championships, and perpetuating a fraud.
In Florida, we reject these lies and recognize Sarasota's Emma Weyant as the best women's swimmer in the 500y freestyle. pic.twitter.com/tBmFxFE3q6

In his proclamation, DeSantis said the association is doing a real disservice to biological women by letting biological men compete, “making a mockery of its championships.” Thomas reportedly started testosterone suppression medication in 2019. However, despite the fact Thomas adhered to the guidelines, Nancy Hogshead-Makar of Champion Women said the medication does nothing to “roll back puberty.”
Emma Weygant is a Sarasota, Florida native, and DeSantis believes her dedication to the sport earned her the rightful win.
