State Passes Law Approving Home Loans for Illegal Immigrants

(DailyVantage.com) – California lawmakers are on the verge of passing new legislation that would make illegal aliens in the state eligible for as much as $150,000 in home loans.

The measure, which is bound to pass in the Democrat supermajority legislature, would become added fodder for Republican nominee Donald Trump in his race against Vice President Kamala Harris.

The California bill would be a political risk for Harris who is seeking to portray herself as tough on immigration now that she is running for president.

Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt described the California bill as “fundamentally unfair” but said it was “typical” of the Democrat-run state.

California Republican lawmakers have pushed back on the measure but with the Democrats holding a supermajority in both the Assembly and Senate, Republican opposition is unlikely to stop it from passing.

The legislation was introduced by Fresno Democrat Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula who argued that the bill would still require that applicants meet the Fannie Mae requirements to qualify for the loans, including having a valid social security number or taxpayer identification number.

Under the state’s California Dream for All loan program, eligible applicants are provided 20 percent in down payment assistance, up to but not exceeding $150,000. The interest charged for the loan is based on 15-20 percent of the home’s value upon selling.

The program, which is run by the California Housing Financing Agency, is funded by the state through mortgage loans.

Assemblyman Arambula told Politico that the measure seeks to “be as inclusive as possible” so that everyone who pays taxes in California is eligible. The bill is in response to a federal law that prevents illegal aliens from qualifying for state benefits without a state law that makes them eligible.

Vice President Harris has pushed a Biden-Harris administration proposal that would provide down payment assistance of up to $25,000 for first-generation homebuyers. However, the federal proposal would not be available to illegal aliens.
