(DailyVantage.com) – Rex Heuermann, the alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer, has been charged with the murder of Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old woman who went missing in 2000. Mack’s case is the latest development in the decades-long investigation into a string of murders along Long Island’s South Shore. Her partial remains were first discovered in Manorville, New York, in 2000, with further remains identified near Gilgo Beach in 2011. In 2020, genetic genealogy confirmed her identity, adding to the mounting evidence against Heuermann.
Heuermann, a 60-year-old architect from Long Island, was arrested in July 2023 near his Manhattan office after years of investigations linked him to the killings of multiple women. He was initially charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, whose remains were found in 2010 near Gilgo Beach. As the investigation deepened, he was connected to additional victims, including Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and now Valerie Mack.
Prosecutors allege that Heuermann led a disturbing double life, presenting a professional image while secretly targeting vulnerable women, many of whom were sex workers. Evidence against him includes DNA recovered from a crime scene that matches his estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, though authorities believe the DNA was transferred by Heuermann. Further evidence includes searches and clippings related to the killings, which investigators suggest reflect an obsession with the crimes.
Mack’s remains, like others, were found in separate locations, suggesting dismemberment. Her partial remains in Manorville and later discovery along Ocean Parkway fit the pattern seen with other victims, adding to the gruesome profile of the case.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is being held without bail at Suffolk County Jail. His estranged wife and children, who were reportedly out of town during the times of the murders, are not considered suspects. Ellerup has filed for divorce but remains skeptical of the charges, stating that she will await trial evidence before reaching conclusions.
The Gilgo Beach killings remain one of the most chilling serial murder cases in recent history. With Heuermann now facing charges for seven victims, the prosecution continues to build its case, seeking justice for the victims and closure for their families.
