(DailyVantage.com) – Taylor Lorenz, the polarizing former Washington Post reporter, is parting ways with Vox Media at the end of the year, according to a report from Semafor. The announcement comes just days after Lorenz sparked outrage by appearing to celebrate the public assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on social media.
Earlier this year, Vox Media signed a deal to distribute Lorenz’s Power User podcast and YouTube series, a move that outlets like Axios hailed as a significant win for Vox. At the time, Lorenz expressed optimism about the partnership, touting Vox’s infrastructure as ideal for supporting her ambitions in tech and business journalism. However, the podcast struggled to gain traction, with most episodes on YouTube drawing fewer than 5,000 views—hardly the numbers expected for a so-called “premiere talent.”
The fallout began after Lorenz used her Bluesky account to comment on the shooting death of Thompson, an act that many interpreted as gleeful endorsement. Instead of apologizing, Lorenz doubled down, claiming her comments were a reflection of public sentiment rather than a personal endorsement of violence. “Let me be super clear,” she wrote, “my post uses a collective ‘we’ and is explaining the public sentiment… I am explaining that thousands of Americans (myself included) are fed up with our barbaric healthcare system.”
Critics were quick to call out the contradictions in Lorenz’s defense. If America’s healthcare woes were supposedly resolved by Obamacare, why the need to defend sentiments as extreme as targeting healthcare executives? Moreover, the suspect in the CEO’s murder reportedly holds far-left views, further amplifying concerns about Lorenz’s rhetoric.
This latest controversy isn’t Lorenz’s first brush with public backlash. While at the Washington Post, she reportedly left under a cloud of mistrust after allegedly misleading editors about her social media conduct. Her critics argue that her career has been defined less by journalistic rigor and more by personal drama and inflammatory statements.
Vox Media has not commented on the specifics of Lorenz’s departure. Still, observers suggest that if the outlet were serious about reducing political polarization, they would explicitly condemn statements that appear to encourage violence. Instead, the silence surrounding Lorenz’s exit leaves questions about Vox’s tolerance for such behavior unanswered. For now, Lorenz’s career seems to be taking another downward turn, with her controversial style increasingly alienating audiences and employers alike.
