Teacher Fired After Allegedly Giving Students Dog Treats as Jerky

(DailyVantage.com) – A teacher in Mississippi has been terminated after mistakenly serving dog treats to students during a classroom celebration, according to local ABC affiliate WTVA.

The incident occurred at Calhoun City High School when the unnamed teacher reportedly confused the treats with beef jerky. At least eight students consumed some of the treats before the error was realized, according to Dr. Lisa Langford, superintendent of the Calhoun County School District. The district confirmed that the teacher, whose name has not been released, is no longer employed following the incident.

Langford commended the school nurse for acting quickly, which included contacting Poison Control to ensure the students’ safety. Parents of the affected students were also notified immediately. One student reportedly experienced a stomachache and was taken to a doctor as a precaution. The mistake happened during a birthday celebration for students, but it turned into a serious incident after the teacher realized the error.

“This was an unfortunate mistake, but the health and safety of our students are always our top priorities,” Langford said in a statement. The mishap has sparked discussions about the need for stricter protocols in handling food in schools, as even minor oversights can lead to serious consequences.

While no students suffered major harm, the event serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in ensuring the safety and well-being of children in educational settings.
