Term Limits Rule Introduced by Top Republican Will Force Nancy Pelosi Out

(DailyVantage.com) – Term limits have often been a point of contention in politics. Many believe a person shouldn’t strive to be a lifelong politician and that lawmakers often use their roles to pad their pockets rather than serve the constituents who elected them. Now, one GOP Representative aims to address this issue.

On Thursday, February 10, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) spoke about his plan to introduce legislation imposing term limits. These restrictions would apply to both the Senate and the House of Representatives, with a 12-year cap. This proposal would equate to two Senate terms and six House terms.

Cawthorn recently told Fox News Digitial his main motivation for imposing the limits is to “drain the swamp,” as former President Donald Trump used to say. He added, “If you’re not able to accomplish your goals in over a decade, I really don’t want you to represent me anyway.”

There’s no doubt this is a thinly-veiled barb at career politicians, like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who has benefitted enormously from her time in Washington. The eventual passage of this legislation would immediately force her out of office.

Imposing these limits is an uphill battle, though, no matter who brings it to the table. It would require a constitutional amendment, which needs a two-thirds majority approval in both the House and Senate. If that happens, 38 states would also need to ratify the legislation before becoming law. For now, it might simply be a pipe dream, but just by proposing it, Cawthorn is bringing a longstanding issue to the forefront.
