(DailyVantage.com) – Former Vice President Mike Pence recently made headlines by criticizing Donald Trump in the launch video for Pence’s 2024 presidential campaign. During the video, Pence mentions that there is a need for new leadership within the country, citing growing issues such as inflation and the ongoing immigration crisis.
While most of the video is focused on calling out President Joe Biden and his policy shortcomings, Pence also took aim at his former running mate Donald Trump. Pence stated that the Republican Party needs new leadership, in a subtle remark that implies Donald Trump is unfit to return as the Republican nominee. Pence is the first former Vice President in decades to challenge his running mate in a presidential election, with the last instance occurring during the 1940 election where John Nance Garner ran against his former boss Franklin Roosevelt, and lost.
Pence’s campaign launch video comes just days after he filed the paperwork required to run for president, joining the ranks of other Republican hopefuls like Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. Despite Pence’s success as Indiana’s Governor, he lacks the widespread support that other candidates like DeSantis and Trump have. Trump is still firmly in the lead in polls, with DeSantis resting in second place in terms of popularity. Pence isn’t even in the double digits, which makes his campaign seem unlikely to succeed.
Pence isn’t the only Republican candidate who has taken shots at Donald Trump during their own campaigns, as Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley have both criticized Trump during their election efforts. The most common criticism of Trump shared between the various candidates is how he congratulated Kim Jong Un after North Korea was appointed to the World Health Organization. Despite this controversial move, Trump enjoys a massive lead in terms of popularity, and could still end up as the Republican nominee for the 2024 election.
Trump is in the midst of multiple ongoing criminal cases however, so there’s still a chance for another Republican like Mike Pence to end up as the Republican candidate to go against President Biden.
