(DailyVantage.com) – Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump revealed last Friday that he had accepted an invitation from Fox News to face off against Democrat nominee Kamala Harris in a debate on September 4.
Trump said in an August 2 post on Truth Social that he agreed to participate in a debate moderated by Fox anchors Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum in Pennsylvania on September 4.
The former president, who pulled out of the second scheduled debate with Joe Biden on ABC News after the president withdrew from the race, explained that his defamation lawsuit against ABC News and its anchor George Stephanopoulos presented a conflict of interest for his involvement in the September 10 debate.
Trump added that the Fox News debate would have similar rules to the ones the Biden campaign demanded, except that the September 4 debate would not be in a television studio but in a “full arena” with an audience.
The Harris campaign, which previously announced that the vice president would step in to replace President Biden at the September 10 debate, accused the former president of “running scared” by refusing to attend the ABC News debate.
In a statement responding to Trump’s announcement, Harris campaign spokesman Michael Tyler accused Trump of “trying to back out” of the Biden-Trump debate and said Trump ran to Fox News “to bail him out.”
Tyler did not say whether Vice President Harris would attend the Fox News debate. Instead, he said that she would show up for the September 10 debate whether or not Trump was there.
The Democrat nominee echoed her campaign’s position in a post on X, suggesting that Trump was backing down on his vow to debate Joe Biden “any time, any place” by refusing to debate her on September 10. Harris said that she planned to show up for the ABC News debate even without Trump.
Trump later said that if Vice President Harris refused to participate in the Fox News debate, he would not debate her at all.
ABC News said it would host whichever presidential candidate showed up on September 10.
