(DailyVantage.com) – Following an abysmal performance in the first presidential debate and renewed criticism, President Joe Biden has seen a sharp decrease in support amongst progressive and independent voters throughout the United States.
Former President Donald Trump has gained popularity since Biden’s mistake-riddled debate appearance, culminating in a record-breaking performance in a poll from the New York Times. Over the past few months, Trump has trailed behind Biden in NYT polls by several points, but the latest poll shows that Trump now has a six-point lead over President Biden.
According to the NYT poll, Trump has around 49% of unregistered voters’ support. Compared to Trump, Biden only has approximately 43% of the vote from unregistered voters. Amongst registered voters, Trump maintains an even more substantial lead, with 49% of registered voters supporting the former president over President Biden’s 41%. The latest NYT poll shows a three-point difference from the last survey performed by the media publication, which came just moments before Trump and Biden faced off in the first presidential debate.
The record-breaking lead for Trump comes as various media outlets, including the Times, have reported about growing doubt in President Biden’s mental and physical health amongst his supporters. Biden’s poor debate prompted criticism against the aging president, with many people citing his stuttering episodes and overall confused demeanor as proof of his inability to serve a second term. Members of mainstream media outlets and Biden’s political party called for the president to step down from his reelection campaign, but Biden’s team has reaffirmed the president’s plan to remain the Democratic nominee.
Biden has also faced growing doubt amongst potential voters, many of whom feel that electing Biden could result in issues for the United States. According to the latest NYT poll, around 63% of voters believe a second term under Biden could increase the risk for American citizens. Among the issues cited by concerned voters are Biden’s age and his recent lapses in memory and speaking ability, which some online commenters have compared to dementia-like symptoms. Biden’s team repeatedly addresses the growing concerns about Biden’s health and regularly claims that people highlighting the president’s various mistakes or issues are opportunists seeking to portray the president negatively.
