Trump Team Complains to FEC Over $91M Transfer to Harris

(DailyVantage.com) – President Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 presidential election, resulting in Vice President Kamala Harris receiving Biden’s raised cash for her presidential bid. Biden’s decision to drop from the race has made Harris the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, and the president further supported Harris through an official endorsement and the aforementioned transfer of campaign funding. Former President Donald Trump’s team has filed a legal challenge against Harris’s campaign, claiming that Harris violated guidelines established by the Federal Election Commission by accepting Biden’s campaign funds.

Trump’s team filed the complaint just days after Harris became the presumptive nominee, citing Harris’s taking of Biden’s $91 million campaign budget as a clear violation of federal election finance laws. The complaint against Harris featured scathing language and accused the vice president of circumventing federal law to commit a “heist” of Biden’s remaining campaign funds. According to the Trump team’s general counsel, David Warrington, Harris’s decision to take the funding would be the most severe violation of the 1971 Federal Election Campaign Act in its history.

The Trump campaign filed the complaint against Biden and Harris, and the Biden campaign which has rebranded to Harris’s presidential campaign. According to the complaint, the Federal Election Commission should consider Harris taking Biden’s campaign funds as an excessive contribution. The complaint also accuses Harris’s team of filing fraudulent paperwork to receive the funding, given how Biden’s donors didn’t know their campaign funding would go to Harris instead of Biden.

Trump’s team also highlighted how Harris violated federal election law regarding how a presidential campaign should begin. Federal law requires a statement of candidacy, where a candidate announces their plan to seek a position and for a candidate to establish a committee. Harris never filed a statement of candidacy, as her campaign shadow-launched after Biden confirmed he wouldn’t seek reelection. Harris never established a committee; instead, the vice president renamed Biden’s campaign with an amendment.

Harris’s campaign briefly addressed the complaint and said that Trump’s team filed the complaint to hinder Harris’s presidential bid. Harris’s team accused the Republican Party of worrying about Harris’s chance of winning, given how quickly the Democratic Party united behind the vice president as the presumptive nominee. Harris has also addressed the complaint, describing it as “baseless” and confirming that she plans to move forward with her current team and the $91 million raised by Biden.
