(DailyVantage.com) – At a memorial service on Monday for late NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, Johnny’s widow, Meredith Gaudreau, made an emotional announcement that she is pregnant with their third child. The news, described as a “total surprise,” came just weeks after the tragic deaths of Johnny and Matthew, who were struck by a suspected drunk driver in Salem County, New Jersey, while riding their bikes.
Meredith shared that she was able to tell Johnny about the pregnancy before his death, and his reaction was heartwarming. “John and I had the best six months as a family of four. These will forever be the best six months of my life,” she said during the service. Reflecting on that special time, Meredith added, “We’re actually a family of five. I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby.”
The couple’s oldest child, a daughter, is set to turn 2 later this month, while their youngest, a son, was born earlier this year. Meredith expressed her gratitude for the time she spent with Johnny and their children, saying, “In less than three years of marriage, we’ve created a family of five. It doesn’t even sound possible, but I look at it as the ultimate blessing.”
Johnny Gaudreau, who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and his brother Matthew were killed just before their sister Katie’s wedding. Adding to the family’s grief, Matthew’s wife, Madeline, is also pregnant. The tragic incident has deeply affected the family and the broader hockey community.
The driver involved, Sean M. Higgins, has been charged with two counts of death by auto, reckless driving, and other related charges, including possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle. In a joint statement, his lawyers, Matthew Portella and Richard Kineburger III, acknowledged the emotional toll of the tragedy but emphasized that the legal process is still in its early stages.
The service was a somber yet poignant reminder of the love shared by Johnny, his family, and his legacy both on and off the ice, as Today reported.
