(DailyVantage.com) – An Arizona man is behind bars after allegedly tampering with food at a Walmart in Mesa by spraying it with bug killer, police said. The suspect, identified as Charles Smith, 27, faces a slew of charges, including felony poisoning, criminal damage, endangerment, and theft.
The Mesa Police Department confirmed Smith’s arrest in a statement, describing the incident as a reckless social media stunt that endangered public safety.
According to police, Smith entered the Walmart on the evening of December 19, allegedly with the intent to film a prank for social media. He reportedly stole a can of bug killer and used it to spray produce and prepared food items, including rotisserie chickens, while recording himself. The video, which captured his face and the act of spraying, was later uploaded online.
Authorities say the contaminated items were immediately removed from the store’s shelves, and the area was thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. Walmart has since apologized to customers for any inconvenience caused.
“Thanks to the tireless work of our officers and detectives, an arrest occurred less than 24 hours after police were notified of the incident,” the Mesa Police Department said in a statement. “We also extend our gratitude to the Tempe Police Department for their valuable contributions and collaboration in quickly solving this case.”
Smith voluntarily turned himself in after being identified through investigative efforts. During questioning, he reportedly admitted to stealing the bug killer and spraying it on food.
Walmart, for its part, assured customers that all affected items had been removed. “We will continue to work closely with law enforcement during their investigation,” the company said.
Authorities used the incident to warn against the dangers of social media pranks, emphasizing that such stunts can have serious legal and public health consequences. Smith now faces potentially severe penalties for his actions, which disrupted the store and posed risks to unsuspecting customers.
